I've had mine for a couple months now. He/she is about 6 inches long and has started to become more active during the day. I'm not sure if its because he/she is searching for food or if he/she has become more comfortable. The other fish in the tank are a couple veiled angelfish, a red tail shark, 2 dwarf neon rainbowfih and 4 irian rainbowfish. All is well in the compatability department thus far.

My question is I was wondering if there are any GOOD food alternatives to frozen bloodworms and frozen mysis shrimp? Both are accepted willingly. The tank is fed one cube during the night to let the BGK get most of it and once during the lighted hours for the others to get most of it.

Thanks for any suggestions

Hey - my BGK fish is about two yr's old. We also have two younger ones. We have hiding spots in our tank, but the older one; which has gotten quite big, is swimming very weird. It is out most of the day now and we think it is going to die, but it hangs on day after day. It twirls around in circles. It looks like it is confused and drunk. I've been searching for information on these fish, but I have a hard time finding much. Thanks for any help - Michelle

Hello all, I have had some bad luck with my BGK's I have gotten 2 and lost two. the 1st time I have a random spike of NH3 due to the fact that the city i live in laces the tap water with ammonia chorlide. sence then i have been able to keep the NH3 at 0 for about 3 weeks now. I got a 2nd one and it died a week later still unknown why. what are good conditions for BGK? do they like fast or slow moving water, what is the best food choice for them? I tried sinking carinvore drops, frozen and freeze dried blood worms, and Ghost shrimp. I have a 55 gal tank with a very good filtation and a kory cat to help clean up uneaten food. what am I doing wrong?

I've found with my BGK, he gets pearly grey areas on his tail and lower flanks when he is underfed or stressed. I use live guppies to feed and supplement with frozen brine or bloodworms when he decides not to feed on the live fish. He's also survived a few long-distance car trips (during which he turned grey).

Another interesting thing I recently found was that he decided to fight my husband when we were removing him from the tank. He thrashed so hard that he broke off the last 2 inches of his own tail. Surprisingly, it grew back! It's a little crooked, but it makes him stand out in a crowd, you know?

I keep no other fish (other than feeder guppies) with my BGK and he seems quite happy to be left alone. We've paired him previously with plecos, a rainbow shark, and other various fish. Anything smaller than his mouth was eventually eaten. However, he is my pride and joy and well worth the daily maintenance!!

I recently bought two tiger barbs for my tank as starter fish. The fish shop they were suitable along with two kuhli loaches.

The barbs started out being aggressive to each other so I had decide to return them to the store the next day after reading how they shouldn't be kept in groups of less than 5/6

They had killed each other by the morning.

I was annoyed that the shop hadn't warned me that such a small group was likely to result in one killing the other. I had had them less than 24 hours and felt awful. When we went back one of the people said they were surprised, one said they weren't.

I would advise against having them in small sets.

I'm not too sure about the nipping, maybe against other breeds or younger fish.... I have a serpae and a red eye tetra in the same tank (they each had a school at one time, but somehow my tank levels drifted fast and I lost the others) and it seems that they keep to their own areas of the tank.

the serpae stays low and feeds closer to the bottom, while the red-eye shoots to the top to feed and alot of the time chases away the serpae, and I usually see the red-eye doing the bullying in the tank, but he's also the oldest of the two.

I've also noticed they are sensitive to water temp, preferring the 74-76f range, and the light being on, as if the temp drifts or the light is off for a few days they turn pale until the light is turned back on.
